Who We Are

Created through federal legislation, Mountain Area Workforce Development oversees a single, comprehensive strategic plan for the four-county area by identifying workforce development issues and the needs of local businesses.

Our budget approaches $2 million annually and we allocate those funds for skill training in the four-county area. All services provided through the NCWorks Career Centers are free of charge unless otherwise noted.

What We Do:

  • Designs and implement a strategic plan to meet the needs of the region's businesses for a skilled, reliable and proficient workforce; and meet the skill development and job acquisition needs of the region's jobseekers.
  • Engage in public/private partnerships that respond to emerging workforce issues and economic development opportunities.
  • Allocate funds for, and oversee the operations of, the NCWorks career centers in each of the region's four counties.
  • Assist jobseekers in researching, planning, and accomplishing their career and employment goals.
  • Provide a broad range of business services that are focused on enhancing the expertise of existing workers and job candidates.

Our Core Beliefs:

  • Building the skills of our workforce is essential to the region's economic competitiveness and vitality.
  • Local business, education, and community leaders have the expertise and foresight to guide workforce development investments.
  • The choice of an appropriate career is one of the most important, and often one of the most casually considered decisions in life. An informed, intentional career choice contributes enormously to one's quality of life.
  • The pace of technological change in communications, production, and the delivery of goods and services must be matched by a commitment and skills required to surpass expectations.
