About the Program

 

Since 1991, Waste Reduction Partners has provided Western North Carolina clients with waste reduction efficiency assessments, energy efficiency surveys, and assistance to enhance environmental excellence programs.

 

Services are provided by a team of highly experienced engineers, architects, and scientists who share their wealth of knowledge with clients.  The team makes specific recommendations to reduce waste, save money, and use natural resources more efficiently.

 

The program is funded by local, state, and federal grants and private donations to provide its services at no charge to business, industries, and public entities.  All services are confidential and non-regulatory.

Waste Reduction Partners [previously named Waste Reduction and Technology Transfer (WRATT)] is a program of the Land-of-Sky Regional Council (LOSRC), a governmental non-profit organization that assists local governments with planning and decision-making.

Waste Reduction Partners’ Mission:

 

To work toward a sustainable economy, healthy environment, and better quality of life by helping Western North Carolina businesses, industries, institutions, and governmental entities reduce waste and manage natural resources efficiently.

 

WRP Visioning Process & Program Goals

 

In 1999, the Waste Reduction Partner program embarked on a Visioning Process to develop a business plan with operating goals and objectives.  WRP program goals are presented below.  These goals provided the basis for the work accomplishment in this FY2000 annual report.

Helping Expand the Market Place for Waste Reduction Services

 

WRP helps facility managers and business leaders provide top and bottom line value to their organizations by reducing costs and improving environmental performance.  WRP work is premised on promoting and increasing awareness of waste reduction, pollution prevention, energy efficiency, and environmental excellence opportunities.  The no-cost services of WRP help organization identify these potential opportunities while providing additional resource information, contacts, and non-bias referrals.  Client organizations may seek a number of avenues to implement these identified improvements opportunities, including the use of vendors, private consultants, business service providers, or in-house support.  The value of such improvement opportunities is shared by all stakeholders in the process, including client organizations and the private service providers.

Summary of Accomplishments

 

 

The Program

 

Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) is an innovative, community-based program that assists public and private organizations to improve their environmental performance and economic competitiveness.  This unique program utilizes retired engineers, scientists, and architects to provide clients in Western NC with innovative cost-effective strategies to reduce waste, conserve water, and use energy efficiently.

 

Since 1991, the program has performed more than 300 on-site assessments, recommending more than $2,500,000 in waste reduction savings to clients. WRP is a program of the Land-of-Sky Regional Council, a governmental non-profit organization, and works in special partnership with the NC Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA).  

 

Accomplishments

 

Waste Reduction Partners addresses acute environmental needs facing the Western North Carolina (WNC) community.  In 2000, WRP volunteers preformed 51 facility assessments in 13 WNC counties.  Specific environmental accomplishments in 2000 include:

FY 2000 Assessments

 

Waste Reduction Partners staff conducted 51 waste reduction, water efficiency and energy management assessment during the fiscal year.  Assessments were conducted in 13 WNC counties. Over 9000 technical assistance hours were provided by WRP volunteers, Land-of-Sky Regional Council staff and DPPEA staff.  Many of the assessments included multiple visits to the clients by WRP volunteer assessment team and addressed multi-media waste issues.  Organizations are not referred to by name since all program assistance is considered confidential except were companies have allowed release of assistance information or clients are public entities.
