SOLVENTS, PAINT THINNER, MINERAL SPIRITS, TURPENTINE

Paint thinners, mineral spirits and turpentine can be reused by first letting the paint particles settle to the bottom in the container you cleaned the brushes in. Cover the container to prevent evaporation during the settling process. After several days, pour off the clear liquid into a clean, labeled, sealed container for reuse on future projects.

PAINT

Household paints contain chemicals that can endanger human health and the environment if disposed of improperly. Liquid paint cannot be put in household trash. The best option is to Buy Only What You Need, Use It Up, Donate it to a local non-profit organization or Give it to a friend. As a last resort we suggest the following:

Latex Paint-When small quantities remain in the can, air-dry latex or water-based paint. If there is a larger quantity, you can add kitty litter or cement to help solidify the paint.

Make sure to dry water-based paint in a well-ventilated area away from children and animals. Latex paint must be in solid form for disposal in the County Landfill. Use the above drying methods as a last resort.

Oil-Based Paint-Oil based paint should be used entirely or stored in its original container in a cool, dry place to be held for a household hazardous waste collection.

You may dispose of completely dried paint in Madison County by placing it with household trash in a tagged bag.

To get more information or to obtain paint at no cost, contact Jim Brown at 649-2311.
