Make Your Impact
This competition offered the opportunity to take a lead in today's green economy and gain national recognition in cutting edge eco-design.
The winner received a $2500 scholarship, his design to be presented before a national conference, and featured in a professionally produced film. Finalists will also be featured in national publications.
Call to Action
Land-of-Sky Regional Council conducted the competition with a grant from the EPA. This was the first national collegiate architectural design competition which focused on a Brownfields site. The 13-acre site is in the heart of Asheville, North Carolina's River Arts District.
When the times are changing, our spaces to live, work and play must change with them. This national competition offered current students the opportunity to kick start a career in architectural design, gain practical experience and feature their plans for a sustainable future.
The Challenge
Students were asked to offer nontraditional, inventive redevelopment plans to address issues of stormwater and floodplain management; erosion control, possible soil and groundwater contamination while incorporating elements of green building and land recycling.
Held on the site of America's first tannery, this competition offered participating students hands-on design experience in a complete redesign and rejuvenation of a once derelict site. In the heart of artistic Asheville, this competition gave entrants the chance to shape the future of a thriving and eco-aware community.
