"How do successful recycling programs work?"

See Case Studies from bar and restaurants that recycle successfully.

These are some of the common elements of a successful business recycling program:

  • Good signage - Signs that communicate what and where to recycle should be in strategic locations - near recycling bins and trash cans. You especially need signs if customers chuck their empties - since every place is different, be sure and make the signs visible. Download and print out the free signs on this website! These visual reminders are great cues to remind your staff and your customers to recycle.
  • Consistent pickup or drop-off schedule - Let's face it, we are creatures of habit. So make recycling a part of the regular routine. Have a consistent pick-up day AND time so that collection won't get missed. Or, if you're using a drop-off system, drop off materials at the same time during the week and day, such as the end of each shift.
  • Top-down Support - Proper waste and recycling management procedures must be sponsored and enforced by management staff. Make sure your employees know you support the program and the more they recycle the better.
  • Informed employees - staff are trained on recycling procedures upon hire. All employees are given a "recycling refresher course" at staff meetings. Any problems such as contamination are communicated immediately to staff.
  • Convenience - Always place recycling bins near trash cans. Have a tray station nearby where trays can be set down to separate trash from recycling.
  • Positive reinforcement - Many people report they actually like to recycle because it makes them feel good
  • Evaluate your program - Are there improvements you can make? Are you keeping contamination to a minimum? Are there other materials you could collect, such as mixed paper or cardboard? If you collect more materials, is there a way to renegotiate your waste hauling rates? Keep an eye on your program to make it as efficient as possible.
